Synopsis
The medieval morality play performed as a roving after-hours journey through a shopping mall. Named Best of 1994 by the Los Angeles Times. Performances (1994): Santa Monica Place, Santa Monica, CA; (1997-Southern California Tour): Santa Monica Place, Santa Monica, CA., Montclair Plaza, Montclair, CA., Topanga Plaza, Topanga Canyon, CA.
The Classic Medieval morality play about man's journey to the grave (and what he can and cannot take with him) is transported from the European marketplace of centuries ago to a modern American shopping mall. Traveling through the mall in the last hour of his life, Everyman encounters allegorical characters ("Kin," "Goods," "Good Deeds," etc.). He fears his impending death, and seeks someone to accompany him. The play includes a multi-cultural council of the Gods of various beliefs, and uses stores and mall features just as Medieval players did to draw parallels between Everyman's journey and our own. Everyman himself/herself is played by six different actors as the play progresses throughout the mall. Everyman was produced as an Ensemble Show, and is an excellent example of the company's Site-Specific work.
