Cornerstone Theater Company puts a downtown L.A. spin
on 365 Days/365 Plays
LOS ANGELES, August 16, 2007--For three nights only on September 6-8, Cornerstone Theater Company will block off Traction Avenue in the Los Angeles Downtown Arts District to present a whimsical street edition of Suzan-Lori Parks' 365 Days/365 Plays. Intricate shadow puppetry, mod dance, and film projected onto industrial buildings will be just some of the elements included in the company's contribution to the largest theater festival in U.S. history. The event will be dedicated to Joel Bloom, a celebrated theater artist and local activist who lost his life to cancer this past July.
In November 2002, the Pulitzer prize-winning Suzan-Lori Parks committed to writing a play every day for a year. The world premiere of the play cycle is being performed simultaneously in major cities and communities around the country. From November 13, 2006 to November 12, 2007, over 600 diverse theaters in Atlanta, Denver, Seattle, San Francisco, Austin, Washington D.C., Chicago, Minneapolis, the Carolinas, Mississippi River towns, and here in Los Angeles are participating in the yearlong national festival.
Cornerstone Ensemble members and guest artists are preparing Week 43, which will culminate in three evenings of multimedia street theater directed by Lynn Jeffries, Shishir Kurup, Page Leong, Jennifer Li and Laurie Woolery. The performances will be dedicated to Joel Bloom, a celebrated actor, playwright and activist whose work significantly shaped the Los Angeles Downtown Arts District. The owner of Bloom's General Store, a community hub two doors down from the Cornerstone office, Bloom was a long-time friend and supporter of the company. By making 365 Days/365 Plays a neighborhood event, Cornerstone hopes to honor Bloom?s life and the community he helped build.
Cornerstone's 365 Days/365 Plays will run Thursday-Saturday, September 6-8 at 8:30pm. The audience will gather in Joel Bloom Square, located outside the Cornerstone Theater Company office at 708 Traction Avenue, between East Third and Hewitt Streets in the downtown Arts District, Los Angeles, CA 90013. All performances are free of charge. For more information, call 213-613-1700 x33 or visit www.CornerstoneTheater.org.
